Very shortly we will be making an announcement of where the Pacific Rowing Race will start. It’s amazing to think that in just over a year’s time, boats and crews from around the world will be arrive at the start of the race and make the final tweaks to their boats ahead of the start on June 7th 2014.

The Pacific Rowing Race 2014 will be the first ocean rowing event held on the Pacific Ocean, crews participating will set many new World Records doing what has never been done before, including the first four to row the Pacific, the first all-female pair to row the Pacific as well as many national records for being the first many crews from Canada, Slovakia, France, Australia and New Zealand.

The entries aren’t yet closed but time is running out for those who want to participate in the 2014 race. But if you do want to take part but 2014 isn’t right for you then don’t panic. We’ll be organising the every two years, so you’ll get another chance in 2016.

We’ve been really busy over the last month, with many more crews entering the Pacific Rowing Race 2014. With just over a year until the start we are happy to announce that we have more than 35 courageous individuals in 14 crews who have confirmed their entry into the race. The fleet of ocean rowing boats currently consists of three solo rowers who will take on the challenge of rowing the Pacific on their own, 5 two man boats and 6 four man boats. The crews from these boats come from countries all around the world including Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, Slovakia, UK and USA making this a truely international event.

Although there are a many opportunities for those racing to achieve World Record’s, those entering the race in a four man crew are all battling for the honour to be the first ever four man boat to row the Pacific. A real world first!

The Pacific Rowing Race will start on June 7th 2014 so crews have just 13 months left to prepare for the race of a lifetime.

You can see more details about all the crews as well as following their own progress to the start line via their social media accounts and websites. All of these are listed on the Entrant page.

And it still isn’t too late to join them. If you would like to take part in the Pacific Rowing Race then there is still time to find or form a crew and get your entry in. Don’t leave it too late though or you’ll have to wait until June 2016 for the start of the next Pacific Rowing Race!

We also have some exciting news about the start venue for the race but have to keep quiet about that until everything is confirmed.

As you know we’re constantly searching for ways in which our race entrants and those interested in ocean rowing can connect with those who have already rowed an ocean. We firmly believe that this means that our race entrants will be safer because they won’t make the mistakes made previously. As part of this commitment we continue our series of seminars with another free to attend virtual session. During this event we will be joined by Debbie Beadle (Atlantic East-West 2012 – Five – Row for Freedom)

As this is a fully virtual session all you need to attend is an internet connection or telephone. We will begin with our guest talking about their campaign and then will answer a few questions asked by race entrants.

The session is on March 10th at 5pm UK (9am PDT) To obtain login details for attendance details please send an email to workshop5@newoceanwave.com

We’re giving every crew entered in the Pacific Rowing Race the great chance to win a Raymarine Ray101e Handheld VHF radio.

To win a VHF radio for your crew all you have to do is like the New Ocean Wave facebook page and wait. On the 15th March we will select at random one of the people who have liked our page and they will get to choose which of the race crews will receive the radio.

This handheld VHF radio is one of the many items of safety equipment required for crews taking part in the Pacific Rowing Race. The Ray101 combines performance and convenience in a fully submersible handheld VHF. With 5 watts of transmit power and plenty of battery capacity you’ll definitely be heard loud and clear. Nickel Metal Hydride (NiHM) or alkaline battery support ensures the Ray101 is ready to use when you need it most. An oversized backlit LCD and rotary controls for volume and squelch make operating the Ray101 easy. No accessories are required! The Ray101 comes fully equipped with NiMH batteries, a drop in rapid charger, mobile phone style belt clip, and 12-volt cigarette light adapter cable.

So get your friends liking us now and help your crew win a essential piece of equipment. Terms and conditions apply

The first thing you’ll need to take part in the Pacific Rowing Race is a boat.
There are a number of options:

Buy a new boat from as established builder

Buy a used boat from someone who has finsihed their ocean row

Charter a used boat

Have your own boat built by another boat builder

On our revamped boat page you can see further details of all of these options including our boatmart page with information on all of the used ocean row boats we are aware of. We are also waiting on a few boat owners to get back to us with further details of even more ocean row boats some of which will be available to charter!

Having a boat to train in is a critical moment in preparations for the Pacific Rowing Race. Those crews who spend longer in their boat preparing are more likely to succeed and cross in a quicker time. Having a boat will also make sponsorship easier to find as sponsors can see where their money is going. Essentially a boat brings the project of rowing an ocean to life and ticks one of the largest items off any crew’s to do list.

A little further down the boat page we have also included downloadable plans of the Phil Morrison pairs / fours design of ocean rowing boat that is known for its safety and speed. Obvioulsy you’ll need to contact a skilled boat builder as the plans don’t include many details needed to construct a boat from scratch. The picture below shows the detail included in the plans.

We know that buying your own ocean rowboat can be a costly experience which is why we’re releasing our plans for this new ocean rowboat. However, it does have some downsides. Whilst it does float, it probably won’t support your weight and although it has cabins, the amount of storage space onboard is limited. On the upside though it comes in any colour you choose and costs the same as a sheet of paper.

You might have already guessed that our ocean rowboat design is actually for an origami model of an ocean rowboat. It takes about 5 minutes to build one origami ocean rowboat and once you’ve got the hang of it you can build enough for your very own ocean rowing race in under an hour. Although without rowers onboard it’s unlikely that they’ll go very far!

Click here to learn how to build your own ocean rowboat and please send us pictures of your completed boats so we can add them to the gallery.

We understand that just wanting to row across the Pacific isn’t always enough. If you don’t want to row solo then you have to find a crew to row with and sometimes this isn’t the easiest thing to do. We are happy to announce that we have been able to arrange a very rare opportunity that has just become available for four individuals to form their own ocean rowing crew with all of the hassle removed.

The owner of an ocean rowing four based in the USA is offering individuals the opportunity to form a crew to take part in the Pacific Rowing Race 2014. The cost will include boat charter, entry fees and all equipment required except for foul weather gear, courses, food, accomodation before and after the event and flights to the start and from the finish but does include everything else you need. The total cost per person on this basis is likely to be between $16,000 USD.

The boat (Limited Intelligence) is a seasoned ocean row boat having crossed the Atlantic in 2012 and will be fully serviced prior to the Pacific Rowing Race 2014. We would expect the crew to come together a number of times before the start of the race to spend time in the boat, learn how to row her and gain experience during a number of training sessions.

If you are interested in this unique opportunity then please contact us asap for further details.

One of the questions that we get asked more than any other is “How much does an ocean row cost?”. This is a notoriously difficult question to answer as it depends on so many different elements. It’s similar to buying a car. You can buy a second-hand car that works perfectly well for quite a reasonable amount, or you can buy a supercar with all the gadgets for much much more. Of course, there isn’t just to cost of a boat to consider. There is a lot of equipment that you’ll need to buy for your voyage, some of which can be purchased second-hand. Even if you choose to buy new equipment, the price paid can vary wildly depending on the capabilities of the product chosen. All of these impact on how much your ocean row costs.

The final bill will also depend on where you live. This will impact the cost of flights to the start and from the finish of the race, as well as the cost of shipping your boat. Obviously, joining a crew makes the experience cheaper as some of the fixed costs can be shared between you. Finally, it’s important to remember that, whilst the boat is expensive to buy, as long as you look after her, you can sell her afterwards. This means that the total amount paid isn’t as scary as you might have first thought and is certainly less than climbing Everest (which has been completed by many more people).

All race entrants have access to our race documentation page which includes a complete budget sheet which you can download.

For more detailed information please take a look at this page which provides greater insight into the costs involved with a Pacific Ocean row.

Ocean Rowing members of OAR Northwest, Jordan Hanssen and Greg Spooner joined us on Sunday November 11th. They told us all about preparations for their four man ocean rowing project across the North Atlantic in 2006. They then went on to cover their circumnavigation of Vancouver island in 2012 and their preparations for rowing across the Atlantic this winter from Africa to Miami.

We were really impressed by the level of preparation that they had gone through before departure. It was clear that by ruthless devotion to testing each piece of equipment onboard they were able to overcome many of the challenges that have caused problems for other teams in their past. Checking the deck hatches, realising they weren’t watertight and replacing them was one such example. Another was rebuilding the rudder and daggerboard the boat was supplied with before the start to make it stronger. It is this attention to detail which we want each of the Pacific Rowing Race entrants to develop. Not only does it mean you’re safer it also means you’re less likely to need external assistance from the support vessels and therefore complete the race.

We wish them all the best of luck for their next challenge as early next year they attempt to row across the Atlantic from Africa to Miami. You can read more about their story by buying Jordan’s Book – Rowing into the Son. If you’d like to know more about their next challenge then get hold of a copy of the December issue of Outside magazine (see image below) or by visiting their website.(www.oarnorthwest.com)

Race entrants will also be happy to know that the webinar was recorded and is now viewable from the more information page of the entrant zone.
